Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 24H2 updates are reportedly causing serious problems for certain SSDs and HDDs, leading to data corruption and drive failures.
The issue first surfaced after the release of the KB5063878 security update and the KB5062660 preview update. A Japanese PC enthusiast reported that drives with Phison NAND controllers started disappearing from the operating system during heavy write operations, such as transferring large files or extracting archives.
While some drives returned after a reboot, others remained completely inaccessible. The problem appears more severe on SSDs with over 60% capacity used, where symptoms begin after around 50GB of continuous writing. Similar issues have also been observed on HDDs.
Reports suggest that Phison NAND controllers, especially DRAM-less models, are particularly prone to this bug. Affected devices include drives from SanDisk, Corsair, Maxio, and KIOXIA, as well as models using Phison PS5012-E12 and InnoGrit controllers.
Phison confirmed the problem in a statement, saying it is working closely with Microsoft to investigate and fix the issue. However, Microsoft has yet to release an official acknowledgement or patch.
What should users do?
Until a fix is available, Windows 11 users are advised to avoid writing very large files all at once. Instead, split data transfers into smaller batches. For example, when extracting large archives with hundreds of files, do it in steps rather than in a single operation.
