Wikipedia has paused its AI-generated summaries experiment after facing strong criticism from its community of editors.
The summaries, created using artificial intelligence, appeared at the top of articles with a yellow label marked “unverified.”
The feature was part of a small test for users who had the Wikipedia browser extension and had chosen to opt in. Readers had to click to expand and view the AI-generated content.
However, editors quickly pushed back, warning that the summaries could hurt Wikipedia’s credibility. Many pointed out that AI tools often produce inaccurate or misleading information, also known as “hallucinations.” Similar problems have affected news outlets like Bloomberg, which had to correct or scale back their own AI content experiments.
Despite the pause, Wikipedia says it is still exploring how AI could improve accessibility, such as helping users better understand or navigate articles in the future.
