Google plans to send a software update to some Pixel 6A phones to help prevent their batteries from overheating.

This update will slightly reduce how much the battery can hold and how fast it charges, but only after the phone has been charged more than 400 times.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that the update is meant to keep the phone safe and avoid battery problems. People affected will get a message from Google next month with all the details.

This move comes after a few reports online where Pixel 6A users said their phones got too hot or even caught fire. One person on Reddit said their Pixel 6A “spontaneously combusted” while they were sleeping. Android Authority also found hints in test software that warned users about possible battery issues.

Earlier this year, Google did something similar with the Pixel 4A to prevent overheating. And just recently, the company also expanded a repair program for Pixel 7A phones because of swelling battery problems.

If you own a Pixel 6A, keep an eye out for an official message from Google soon.
