WhatsApp is adding a simpler and more secure way to restore your chat backups with the introduction of passkey support.

This new feature allows you to access your encrypted backups using methods like your fingerprint, face recognition, or the screen lock code from your previous device. If you ever lose your phone, restoring your chats will now be much easier.

In the past, WhatsApp didn’t offer encryption for chat backups. That changed in 2021 when Meta introduced end-to-end encryption for backups, giving users the option to protect their data using either a password or a 64-character encryption key. However, both methods require remembering the password or keeping the key safe, which could be inconvenient if lost.

With passkeys, WhatsApp is eliminating that hassle. You won’t need to search for passwords or long encryption keys anymore — your biometric data or device lock will handle the verification securely.

The feature is being rolled out gradually and should reach all users in the coming weeks and months. WhatsApp, which surpassed 3 billion active users in May, says you can check whether passkey support is available by going to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup on your app.
