OpenAI has released a new update for GPT-5 that helps the model handle sensitive and emotional conversations more effectively.
The update, which was rolled out on October 5, allows GPT to automatically recognize when a user might be struggling emotionally or experiencing distress and respond in a more supportive way.
At the moment, this feature is available only in GPT-5 Instant — the faster, lightweight version of GPT-5 that most free users interact with. If you’re chatting with another GPT-5 model, like GPT-5 Thinking, and the system detects emotional distress or related topics, your conversation will automatically be routed to GPT-5 Instant. OpenAI explained that its “real-time router” now directs sensitive parts of conversations to models best equipped to handle them, ensuring more thoughtful and compassionate responses.
The company said these updates were developed with guidance from mental health experts to help ChatGPT de-escalate emotional situations and gently connect users to real-world crisis resources when needed. GPT-5 is now capable of offering language that feels both supportive and grounding during such interactions.
Beyond emotional support improvements, OpenAI has also introduced new productivity features. ChatGPT can now access organizational context from connected apps like Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, GitHub, HubSpot, and Asana. This feature, known as Company Knowledge, allows GPT to give more personalized and relevant answers based on your team’s files and projects — much like Microsoft 365 Copilot.
The updated GPT-5 with these enhancements is now available to all users.
