Verizon customers across the United States experienced a major wireless service outage on Saturday, August 30, 2025, after the company confirmed a software issue disrupted its network.

The outage left many users unable to make calls, send texts, or access mobile data for several hours.

According to Downdetector, reports of service problems began surging around 3:30 p.m. ET, peaking at over 20,000 outage alerts. Impacted users were concentrated in major cities including Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, and Minneapolis. Many customers reported their phones displaying “SOS” instead of a normal signal, sparking frustration on social media.

Verizon acknowledged the disruption and said engineers were working quickly to fix the issue. In a statement, the company said:

“We are aware of a software issue impacting wireless service for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience.”

By late evening, service began gradually restoring in several regions, with reported issues dropping to under 6,000 by 9 p.m. ET. Still, the outage highlights how dependent millions of people are on mobile connectivity — and how disruptive even a few hours without service can be.
