Spotify has just updated its iPhone app to let U.S. users sign up for plans through its website, skipping Apple’s App Store fees.
This is the first big app to do this, thanks to a new court order forcing Apple to relax its strict App Store rules.
The new version of the Spotify app (version 9.0.40) is now rolling out. It shows clear prices and includes links to Spotify’s site, where users can pay without giving Apple a 30% cut. This means better deals and more choices for users.
Spotify spokesperson Jeanne Moran called this a big win for everyone, from listeners to artists. “We can now give people lower prices, more control, and easier access to Spotify,” she said.
Before this change, Apple didn’t allow apps to mention or link to other ways to pay. But after a judge ruled against Apple in a case with Epic Games, the rules had to change. Spotify quickly submitted the update to test the new policy, and Apple approved it.
