Samsung Electronics reported record second-quarter earnings on Thursday, with net profit soaring nearly 1,300% year over year as booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors more than offset weaker performance in its mobile business.

The South Korean technology giant said net profit for the April–June quarter reached 71.62 trillion won (US$49.6 billion), up 1,299.9% from 5.11 trillion won during the same period last year. Operating income climbed 1,813.8% year over year to 89.49 trillion won, while revenue surged 130% to 171.49 trillion won, marking the company’s third consecutive quarter of record sales and operating profit.

The results were largely in line with market expectations. Analysts surveyed by Yonhap Infomax had forecast net profit of 71.21 trillion won. Earnings per share rose 52% from the previous quarter to 10,849 won for both common and preferred shares, ranking among the highest in the global technology industry.

Samsung credited the strong performance to continued investment in AI infrastructure worldwide, which has fueled demand for high-performance memory chips used in AI servers and data centers. The company’s semiconductor division generated record quarterly sales of 127.5 trillion won and operating profit of 89.2 trillion won, making it the primary driver of overall earnings.

According to Samsung, expanding AI infrastructure and tighter semiconductor supplies have kept memory chip prices elevated throughout the quarter. The company expects demand to remain strong in the second half of the year as businesses continue investing in AI servers and agentic AI technologies.

Samsung also said it anticipates the global chip market will remain favorable into next year, with the gap between semiconductor supply and demand expected to widen further. To capitalize on the trend, the company plans to optimize its product portfolio across both DRAM and NAND flash memory based on changing customer requirements and market conditions.

The company also expects improved profitability in its foundry business as it shifts its focus toward higher-growth semiconductor segments. Capital expenditures totaled 16.8 trillion won during the quarter, including 15.4 trillion won invested in its chip business and 700 billion won allocated to its display division.

Samsung has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the global AI boom, leveraging its position as the world’s largest memory chip manufacturer to meet rapidly growing demand for AI-focused semiconductor technologies.
