OpenAI is offering eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers up to $500 in monthly API credits, giving developers more room to experiment with its AI models and build applications without immediately paying additional API fees.

Announced on October 28, 2026, the new benefit connects paid ChatGPT subscriptions with OpenAI’s developer platform while keeping the two billing systems separate.

The amount users receive depends on their subscription tier. Pro subscribers on the $100 plan can claim $100 in monthly API credits, while those on the $200 and $500 plans receive $200 and $500, respectively. For ChatGPT Business, Standard seats contribute $20 per paid seat and Premium seats contribute $100 per paid seat. Credits are pooled across the workspace, with a maximum allowance of $500 per monthly billing cycle.

According to OpenAI’s official API credits documentation, the benefit supports a range of developer services, including the Responses API, Agents API, real-time voice capabilities through GPT-Live and the Realtime API, and image generation through the Images API. Developers can use the allowance to experiment with AI-powered applications, automate tasks and build agents using OpenAI’s tools.

Subscribers must activate the offer through their ChatGPT billing settings or the API platform. To qualify, they need an eligible paid subscription that has been active for at least seven days, ownership of the relevant ChatGPT subscription or Business workspace, and ownership of the API organization receiving the credits. The ChatGPT and API accounts must also use the same email address. The first credit grant may be prorated depending on the time remaining in the current billing cycle.

The credits apply to one linked API organization and do not increase ChatGPT message limits, image-generation allowances or signed-in Codex usage. They also cannot be transferred freely between API organizations. Unused credits expire at the end of the applicable billing cycle rather than rolling over to the next month. Eligible Business workspaces billed annually receive their allowance under a separate annual grant schedule.

OpenAI says subscribers do not need to add an API payment method to use an active promotional credit balance. However, once the credits run out, API requests may fail unless the organization has purchased credits available or adds funds through its API billing settings. Normal API rate limits and usage policies continue to apply.

The new benefit gives paying subscribers an additional way to explore OpenAI’s developer tools without treating ChatGPT subscription fees as API funds. For developers who want to build AI applications, test models or create automated workflows, the offer provides a defined budget for API experimentation while maintaining a clear distinction between using ChatGPT and developing software with the OpenAI API.

Eligible subscribers can check availability and activate the offer through ChatGPT billing settings or consult OpenAI’s API credits guide for the complete eligibility requirements and activation instructions.
