Russian authorities have blocked access to the website Archive.today, a popular tool for viewing archived versions of web pages, including content behind paywalls. Several related domains, such as Archive.is and Archive.ph, also appear to be affected.
Users trying to access the site are shown a message stating that a decision of government authorities has blocked the resource. The notice references Roskomnadzor, Russia’s internet censorship agency. While officials confirmed that access to at least one Archive domain is restricted, they have not publicly explained the reason for the block.
Despite this, the restriction does not seem to be fully widespread. Reports suggest that the site can still be accessed from different devices or networks, and users are still able to archive pages in some cases.
Archive.today is widely known for saving snapshots of web pages, often allowing users to bypass paywalls or login requirements. The platform has also faced criticism recently. Wikipedia editors removed a large number of links to the site after concerns were raised that its code may use visitors’ browsers without consent to send unwanted traffic to a critic’s website.
The operators of Archive.today have not responded to requests for comment so far.
