Proton, the company behind Proton Mail, has launched Lumo, a new AI assistant designed to offer powerful tools like document summarization, code generation, and email writing—without compromising user privacy.
What sets Lumo apart from mainstream AI chatbots is Proton’s strict privacy-first approach. All data is stored locally on the user’s device and protected with zero-access encryption, meaning even Proton cannot access your content. This ensures that user data won’t be shared with advertisers, governments, or used to train AI models, the company says.
Although Lumo supports web search, it’s disabled by default to maximize privacy. If users choose to enable it, Lumo uses only privacy-friendly search engines. The assistant can also analyze uploaded files and integrate with Proton Drive, maintaining end-to-end encryption throughout.
“Big Tech is using AI to supercharge the collection of sensitive user data,” said Proton CEO Andy Yen, positioning Lumo as a privacy-conscious alternative to ChatGPT, Meta AI, and Google Gemini.
Lumo runs on open-source models hosted on Proton’s European servers, including Mistral Nemo, OpenHands 32B, and OLMO 2 32B. The chatbot dynamically selects the best model for each task—for example, coding tasks are handled by OpenHands.
You can try Lumo at lumo.proton.me or download the app for iOS and Android.
