Threads is expanding its desktop experience by rolling out messaging support on the web, allowing users to send one-on-one and group chats directly from their browsers.

The update brings the platform closer to rivals like X and Bluesky, both of which already support messaging across desktop and mobile.

Meta’s Head of Threads, Connor Hayes, said web messaging had become the most requested feature after Threads introduced direct messages in July 2025. He explained that many of the platform’s most active users spend long periods on the web version while working at their desks, making messaging support an important addition.

The updated web version of Threads now includes a dedicated “Messages” tab that opens the DM inbox. Users can also access a “Requests” section to manage incoming messages, search conversations, and quickly start new chats.

Meta had already hinted earlier this year that messaging support would eventually arrive on the desktop version of Threads. Since then, messaging has become a major part of the social platform. According to the company, users are now sending around 350 million direct messages every week, with message activity increasing by 30 percent since the beginning of the year.

Threads has continued adding new features since launching in 2023 as it competes with other social platforms. One of its latest additions is Live Chats, a feature designed for real-time discussions during live events and trending moments.

The feature is launching first within the NBA Threads community during the playoffs and allows users to send messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions in shared chats. Up to 150 people can actively participate in a Live Chat at once, while additional users can still follow the conversation, react to messages, and join polls in spectator mode.
