WhatsApp is rolling out a major update for iPad users, allowing them to register their WhatsApp account directly on an iPad for the first time.
Instead of relying on another smartphone as the main device, the iPad can now function as the primary device, bringing the tablet experience much closer to using WhatsApp on a mobile phone. The feature is currently being released with the latest update and will gradually become available to more users.
Until now, the WhatsApp iPad app only worked in companion mode, requiring users to link it to an existing phone. With this update, users can choose to set up WhatsApp directly on their iPad without that limitation. Those who still prefer using the app as a linked companion device can continue to do so without any changes.
The new functionality makes the iPad version far more independent and offers an experience that closely matches WhatsApp on iPhone. The update is another step in Meta’s broader effort to improve WhatsApp across multiple devices, giving users greater flexibility in how they access their chats and calls.
As with most WhatsApp feature rollouts, it may take some time before the update reaches all eligible users worldwide.
