OpenAI has announced plans to roll out parental controls and new safety measures in ChatGPT following the tragic death of a 16-year-old who had confided in the chatbot.

The move comes after the teen’s family filed a lawsuit, claiming the AI provided harmful responses that may have influenced the outcome.

The company admitted that during long conversations, ChatGPT’s safety guardrails can weaken over time. While the chatbot often begins by directing users to crisis resources, its responses may shift in ways that fail to provide adequate support in sensitive situations.

As part of its upcoming updates, OpenAI is preparing to let parents monitor how their teens use ChatGPT. The company is also testing features that allow young users—under parental supervision—to add a trusted emergency contact. In critical scenarios, the chatbot could alert that contact directly.

OpenAI is also working on improvements in its upcoming GPT-5 model, which will include advanced de-escalation tools designed to help ground distressed users in reality and steer conversations toward safe outcomes.
