OpenAI is reportedly working on a new desktop superapp that will bring together ChatGPT, Codex, and its Atlas browser into a single platform.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the move is part of a broader effort by the company to simplify its product lineup and focus more on the tools that are gaining traction. The report said the plan was outlined in a memo from Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications.
In the memo, Simo reportedly said product fragmentation has been slowing the company down and making it harder to meet its desired quality standards. By combining key products into one desktop app, OpenAI appears to be aiming for a more streamlined experience for users and a more focused direction internally.
The report comes as OpenAI faces increasing competition in the AI market, particularly from Anthropic. Interest in Claude Code has grown in recent months, putting more pressure on OpenAI to sharpen its strategy and strengthen its most promising products.
The company made several high-profile moves last year, including the launch of the Sora video app and its acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup. But recent internal discussions have reportedly centered on deciding which efforts deserve more attention and which ones should be scaled back.
Simo also commented publicly on the company’s direction in a post on X. She said businesses often go through periods of exploration and periods of refocus, and both are important. She added that when new bets begin to show strong results, it becomes necessary to double down on them and avoid distractions.
