OpenAI is working on a new feature that could let you sign in to third-party apps using your ChatGPT account.
The company quietly shared this update on a web page earlier this week and is now asking developers if they’d be interested in using the service in their apps.
ChatGPT has become one of the biggest apps in the world, with around 600 million monthly users. With this kind of popularity, OpenAI seems to be exploring new ways to expand, including into areas like online shopping, social media, and personal devices.
The new “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature would compete with similar options already offered by tech giants like Google, Apple, and Microsoft, who all provide quick and easy sign-in methods for other apps.
Earlier this month, OpenAI tested the feature with developers through its open-source tool Codex CLI. Developers could link their ChatGPT accounts and even get free API credits — $5 for Plus users and $50 for Pro users — as part of the trial.
The developer form OpenAI shared shows that they’re looking to partner with a wide range of companies, from small startups to massive platforms with over 100 million users. They’re also asking developers how they currently charge for AI and if they already use OpenAI’s API.
CEO Sam Altman had mentioned the idea back in 2023, but it looks like OpenAI is now taking serious steps to make it real. It’s not yet clear when the feature will launch or which apps will support it, but it could be a major shift in how people use ChatGPT across the internet.
