Google is adding helpful new features to Drive, making it easier for Workspace users to understand what’s in their saved videos.
A tool called Gemini, which already summarizes documents and PDFs in Google Drive, can now also work with videos. This means you can get a quick summary of a video’s content without having to watch the whole thing.
Gemini works like a chatbot. You can ask it questions about the video, such as listing action items from a meeting or pointing out the main updates in a product announcement. This saves time and effort, especially when dealing with long recordings.
To use this feature, videos need to have captions turned on. You can access it either through Drive’s preview window or by opening the video in a new browser tab. Right now, it’s only available in English and for people using Google Workspace, Google One AI Premium, or those who have bought the Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons. It may take a few weeks for everyone to see the feature.
Google is also rolling out a separate update that shows how people interact with videos in Drive. Now, the video player will include analytics that tell you how many times a video has been opened. You can find this data in the Details panel under the Analytics section. This is useful if you want to see how often your videos are being viewed.
