Instagram has started supporting photos in a 3:4 aspect ratio.

This means when you upload a photo in that format, it will show up exactly the way you took it. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared the update in a post on Threads. He also pointed out that most phone cameras already use 3:4 as the default setting.

Before this change, Instagram allowed rectangular photos in a 4:5 ratio, but those were slightly cropped. Now with 3:4, your entire photo will be shown without cutting off the top or bottom. This update works for both single-photo posts and carousel posts.

You can still upload photos in square or 4:5 formats if you prefer.

This update comes after Instagram’s earlier change in January, when profile grids switched from showing square photos to rectangles.

At the time, Mosseri explained that most photos and videos uploaded to Instagram are now vertical, so the platform is adapting to better fit how people take and share content.
