Google says it has resolved a Gmail issue that caused emails to appear in the wrong inbox categories and incorrectly triggered spam warnings for many users on Saturday.
According to Google’s official Workspace Status Dashboard, the problem began around 5 a.m. Pacific time, when users started experiencing widespread email misclassification. Messages that normally belong in the Promotions, Social, or Updates tabs were instead appearing in the Primary inbox, while some emails from trusted senders were wrongly flagged as spam.

Many users took to social media to report the disruption, saying Gmail’s filters suddenly seemed broken. Some complained that spam messages were landing directly in their inboxes, while legitimate emails were delayed or marked with warning labels.
Throughout the day, Google updated its dashboard to say engineers were still working on the issue. Later on Saturday evening, the company confirmed that the problem had been fully resolved for all users.
In a final update, Google said that while normal email classification has been restored, some spam warnings on emails received before the fix may remain visible. The company also acknowledged that some users experienced delays in receiving messages during the incident.
Google added that it plans to publish a full analysis explaining what caused the outage once its internal investigation is complete.
