Nvidia is reportedly in advanced discussions to provide around $250 billion in financing guarantees to OpenAI for one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence infrastructure projects.
The proposed deal would support OpenAI’s plan to lease a massive 10-gigawatt AI data center campus in southern Ohio that is being developed by SoftBank’s energy subsidiary, SB Energy.
According to reports, the entire project could cost more than $500 billion, including the Nvidia AI chips that will power the facility. The proposed $250 billion guarantee would help cover the lease and debt financing for the data center but would not include the cost of the chips themselves. Nvidia is also reportedly discussing separate financing for up to $350 billion worth of AI chips that OpenAI would purchase for the project.
If completed, the agreement would represent a major shift in OpenAI’s infrastructure strategy. Instead of relying primarily on cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle, the ChatGPT maker would gain far greater control over its own computing resources, allowing it to train and operate increasingly powerful AI models on dedicated infrastructure.
The deal would also benefit Nvidia by securing long-term demand for its AI accelerators, which have become the industry standard for training and running advanced AI systems. Providing financing guarantees could also make lenders more comfortable funding a project of this unprecedented size, helping reduce borrowing costs for OpenAI.
Construction is expected to happen in phases. The first phase of the Ohio campus is currently planned for completion by 2028 and is expected to deliver approximately 800 megawatts of computing capacity before expanding toward the full 10-gigawatt vision.
The reported discussions come as AI companies and chip manufacturers continue investing hundreds of billions of dollars into next-generation computing infrastructure, reflecting the rapidly growing demand for the enormous processing power required to develop future AI models.
