Microsoft is finally giving the classic Run dialog in Windows a fresh new look after more than 30 years.
The company recently promised to add a dark mode to Run, and now it is testing a modernized design that fits better with the overall style of Windows 11. The updated version was spotted by X user Phantomofearth in the latest Windows 11 preview builds.
The redesigned Run box looks more like a modern app launcher, yet it works the same as it always has. The Run command has been part of Windows since the Windows 95 era, becoming a favorite tool for power users who rely on quick shortcuts like “mspaint” to open Microsoft Paint, “calc” for the calculator, or “dxdiag” for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
