Microsoft has fixed a Windows 11 bug that caused some desktop settings to disappear or reset, with affected users reporting that their wallpapers were automatically replaced with a solid black background.
The issue appeared after installing the KB5120998 August 2026 preview update on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Microsoft said the update could prevent Windows from correctly loading certain desktop settings, leaving customized backgrounds unable to load properly.
For affected users, manually restoring the desktop settings did not solve the problem because Windows was unable to correctly load the settings regardless of the selected values. As a result, the system displayed a default black background instead.
The same KB5120998 preview update was also reported to change or reset mouse settings, making it difficult for users to restore their previous configurations. Although the update was optional, it could be installed automatically when the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option was enabled.
Microsoft says the problem has now been resolved through the September 8, 2026 Windows updates, including KB5124008 and later releases. The company recommends installing the latest security update, which includes the fix along with other improvements and issue resolutions.
