Microsoft has released a new monthly update for Windows 11 that greatly improves HDR (High Dynamic Range) support.
The KB5058499 update gives users more control over HDR settings, allowing HDR video playback even when HDR is turned off system-wide.
With this update, users can now stream HDR content from apps like Netflix or YouTube without enabling HDR across the entire Windows interface. This is a welcome feature for those who prefer to keep HDR disabled due to inconsistent support in some apps or tools.
Another major change is improved control over Dolby Vision. Previously, Dolby Vision was automatically enabled if supported by the monitor. Now, users can manually toggle Dolby Vision on or off, giving more flexibility over how HDR is used in both apps and Windows itself.
These new settings are especially helpful for users who work with screen capture tools or frequently switch between HDR and SDR content. Many tools still don’t handle HDR well, often leading to dull or washed-out screenshots and videos.
Although HDR support in Windows has come a long way—especially with new OLED monitors—there’s still room for improvement. Microsoft and game developers are being urged to take HDR more seriously to make the experience smoother across all apps and games.
