Microsoft is preparing to end support for Manifest V2 extensions in its Edge browser, a move that will affect users of older ad blockers, including uBlock Origin.
Microsoft says Edge will gradually begin disabling remaining Manifest V2 extensions by default starting this month. Users will receive notifications before the change and will be directed toward newer Manifest V3 alternatives when available.
The move follows Google Chrome, which ended support for Manifest V2 earlier this year. Microsoft says only 58 extensions on the Edge Add-On Store with “meaningful usage” still rely on Manifest V2, and just three of them do not have an equivalent version using Manifest V3.
For users who rely on uBlock Origin, one option is to move to uBlock Origin Lite, which is built around Manifest V3. Users can also switch to browsers that continue supporting Manifest V2 extensions. Opera, for example, has said it will continue supporting existing MV2 extensions for as long as it remains technically reasonable, while Firefox is another alternative.
Microsoft’s transition will begin with its Canary, Dev, and Beta versions of Edge before gradually expanding to the Stable release. The company expects to complete the transition for consumer users by the end of 2026.
Enterprise users will not be affected during the initial consumer rollout. Microsoft plans to begin the enterprise transition in early 2027, meaning organizations using managed Edge installations will have more time before Manifest V2 extensions are disabled.
