Microsoft has announced that its AI chatbot Copilot will no longer be available on WhatsApp after January 15.
Once the deadline passes, users will need to switch to the Copilot mobile apps or use the web version to continue chatting with the AI.
According to Microsoft, the removal is due to WhatsApp’s updated platform policies announced last month. Meta stated that WhatsApp will no longer allow general-purpose AI chatbots to use the WhatsApp Business API. The company wants to prioritize the API for other business needs instead of letting external AI chatbots use the platform.
This policy change affects several AI companies, including Microsoft, OpenAI, Perplexity, and others. OpenAI had already revealed that its WhatsApp integration would also be shutting down in January.
There is one more drawback for Copilot users on WhatsApp. Their chat history will not transfer to Microsoft’s platform because the WhatsApp version of Copilot did not require user authentication. Microsoft is advising anyone who wants to save their past conversations to export their chats using WhatsApp’s built-in tools before January 15.
After the shutdown, the only ways to use Copilot will be through Microsoft’s dedicated apps or the web interface.
