Meta’s Threads is now seeing more daily active users on mobile devices than Elon Musk’s X, according to new data from market intelligence firm Similarweb.

As of January 7, 2026, Threads recorded 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android, compared to 125 million for X.

While X continues to dominate on the web, Threads’ mobile app has shown steady growth over the past several months. Similarweb’s data suggests this rise is part of a long-term usage trend, rather than a short-term reaction to recent controversies surrounding X.

Those controversies include concerns around X’s AI tool, Grok, which has been linked to the creation of non-consensual deepfake images. The issue has prompted investigations by California’s attorney general, following similar actions in regions such as the UK, EU, India, and Brazil. The situation has also contributed to a recent increase in app installs for rival platform Bluesky.

However, Threads’ mobile growth appears to be driven mainly by Meta’s ecosystem advantage. The app benefits from heavy cross-promotion on Instagram and Facebook, a growing focus on creators, and the rapid rollout of new features. Over the past year, Threads has added interest-based communities, improved filters, direct messages, long-form posts, disappearing content, and has recently been spotted testing games.

Meta previously said Threads crossed 400 million monthly active users in August 2025 and reported 150 million daily active users in October. Combined with Similarweb’s latest figures, the data suggests Threads is increasingly becoming a regular daily habit for mobile users.

Despite this progress, Threads still lags far behind X on the web. Similarweb estimates that X sees around 145 million daily web visits, while Threads attracts just 8.5 million across Threads.com and Threads.net combined. Even so, the gap on mobile continues to narrow, especially in global markets.
