Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band (OOB) update just days after rolling out its first Windows security update of 2026. The original patch, released on January 13, introduced multiple critical issues, forcing Microsoft to push a fix on January 17, 2026.
According to Microsoft, the January security update caused shutdown and hibernation failures on some systems, along with remote desktop login problems.
The shutdown issue mainly affected devices running Windows 11 version 23H2, specifically Enterprise and IoT editions with Secure Launch enabled.
In addition, the update triggered connection and authentication failures in remote connection applications. This problem impacts a wider range of platforms, including Windows 11 version 25H2, Windows 10 22H2 (ESU), and Windows Server 2025, making it a serious concern for enterprise and business users relying on remote access.
Microsoft confirmed the problems in its official changelog and stated that the emergency update resolves all identified issues.
While out-of-band updates were once rare, this incident adds to a growing list of recent buggy Windows updates, raising concerns about Microsoft’s update testing and release process.
