Meta has announced that it will shut down the standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac on December 15.

After this date, users will not be able to log in and will be redirected to the Facebook website to use Messenger.

According to a Messenger help page, users will get an in-app notification once the shutdown process begins. They will have 60 days to continue using the Mac Messenger app before it becomes completely unavailable. Meta also suggests deleting the app once it stops working.

Windows users can still use the Facebook desktop app, while both Windows and Mac users can access Messenger through the web. Meta is also advising users to turn on secure storage and set up a PIN to keep their chat history safe before switching to the web version.

The decision comes about a year after Meta replaced the native Messenger app with a Progressive Web App in September 2024.

The company’s choice to fully discontinue the desktop apps may disappoint users who prefer using Messenger outside the browser.
