Microsoft says Windows 11 users can now start a conversation with the AI-powered Copilot assistant just by saying ‘Hey Copilot’.
The feature, which was tested by Windows Insiders since May, is now available through the Microsoft Copilot app in the Microsoft Store.
To use the feature, users need to enable Hey Copilot in the app’s settings. After that, they can ask questions or give commands by saying the wake phrase. To end a conversation, users can say Goodbye, tap the X button, or wait a few seconds for Copilot to close automatically.
Once activated, a Copilot microphone icon appears above the Windows taskbar, and users will hear a chime when the assistant is listening. Copilot can also analyze what is on the screen, help troubleshoot settings, or guide users through Windows tools and apps.
Microsoft says the wake word detection uses an on-device audio buffer that is stored locally and never recorded. While the wake word works offline, an internet connection is needed to process commands.
The company says users interact with Copilot twice as much when using voice compared to text. Microsoft also announced new Copilot features, including the ability to generate Office documents and connect with Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar.
