Google has updated its affiliate ads policy for Chrome extensions following allegations against PayPal’s Honey browser extension.

Influencers accused Honey of unfair practices, claiming it replaced their affiliate links with its own before users completed purchases, effectively taking revenue from the same content creators it sponsored.

According to Google’s updated policy, Chrome extensions can only use affiliate links if they provide a clear and direct benefit to users. The rules prohibit extensions from injecting affiliate links in the background or without a related user action. Specifically, extensions cannot add affiliate links unless they offer discounts, cashback, or donations as part of their core functionality.

The policy change aims to prevent deceptive practices in browser extensions and ensure transparency for users.

Google and PayPal have not yet responded to requests for comment on the update.
