Google has announced that it will shut down its old goo.gl link shortener completely by August 25, 2025.
This means any links starting with goo.gl may stop working after that date and show an error page instead. If someone clicks on those links, they might see a message saying the page is not found.
Before the final shutdown, starting from August 23, 2024, some users may see a warning page when they click on a goo.gl link. This warning means that the link will soon stop working. However, Google also said that links which are still active and do not show a warning might continue to work even after the shutdown. But it’s not guaranteed.
Google had already stopped creating new goo.gl links back in 2018. It also told users to switch to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). But now, even FDL will stop working on the same day in 2025.
If you have used goo.gl links on your website, social media, emails, or documents, it’s a good idea to check them now. You can replace them with links from other services like Bitly, TinyURL, or your own custom domain. This will make sure your links keep working and users can reach your content.
Many websites, businesses, and bloggers are affected by this change. If you don’t update your old goo.gl links, people may no longer be able to visit your pages. So, it’s better to fix them before next year to avoid broken links.
