Some people are starting to see a new feature called AI Mode on Google Search. It’s a test version of a chatbot-style search tool that gives AI-generated answers.

Users on social media sites like X and Threads have noticed that Google is testing different places to show the AI Mode button. In some cases, it’s in the search bar next to the “search by image” icon. In other cases, it replaces the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button under the search box.

The design of the AI Mode button also varies. Some users report a rainbow border that moves when you hover your mouse over it. In versions where it replaces “I’m Feeling Lucky,” the rainbow border seems to always be visible, helping the button stand out more.

Back on May 1st, Google said that a small number of people in the U.S. would start seeing this AI Mode option. These screenshots from users give us a sneak peek at how it might look if Google releases it more widely.

For now, a Google spokesperson said this feature is only being tested in Google’s Labs, which is their space for experimental tools.

“We often test different ways for people to access helpful features,” said Ashley Thompson from Google. “This is just one of many experiments.”

It’s unclear if Google plans to fully replace the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. That feature, which sends users straight to the top search result, has been part of Google’s homepage since the beginning. But Google might now believe that AI-generated answers could be a faster and more helpful way to find what people are looking for.
