Google Docs is adding a new Gemini AI-powered feature that can read documents out loud, making it easier for users to listen to their files instead of reading them.
The update was announced on August 19, 2025, and is rolling out first on the desktop web version of Google Docs.
The new option can be found under Tools → Audio → “Listen to this tab” or by inserting an audio button directly into a document. Readers can then press play and hear the text read aloud with natural-sounding AI voices.
Google has included multiple voice styles, such as Narrator, Educator, Teacher, Persuader, Explainer, Coach, and Motivator. Users can also adjust playback speed to match their preference. Currently, the feature only supports English documents and is available for Google Workspace business, enterprise, and education plans, along with Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
This new read-aloud tool is useful for accessibility, proofreading, and multitasking. It can also make shared documents easier to consume, as readers don’t need to copy text into another tool—they can simply listen within Docs. Google says the full rollout will begin on August 25, 2025, for Workspace users on scheduled release domains.
The feature builds on earlier work in NotebookLM, where Gemini AI generated podcast-style audio summaries. Now, that same technology is making its way into Google Docs, giving users a faster and more engaging way to interact with content.
