Google is introducing a new Chrome feature for Android and desktop users that will automatically turn off website notifications you are already ignoring.
The update aims to reduce unnecessary alerts and improve the browsing experience for people tired of constant pop-ups from websites.
The feature works as part of Chrome’s existing Safety Check system, which already helps users manage camera access and location permissions. With this update, Chrome will automatically disable notification permissions for websites that frequently send alerts but get little or no engagement from users.
According to Google, fewer than one percent of all web notifications in Chrome receive any interaction. Most users simply ignore the,m which makes these alerts more annoying than useful. The new feature builds on a similar tool already available on Android that lets users easily unsubscribe from unwanted notifications with one tap.
Google says its internal testing shows that this change greatly reduces notification overload while having almost no effect on the total number of useful notification clicks. Interestingly, websites that send fewer notifications are seeing a small increase in user engagement since their messages are more relevant.
When Chrome disables a site’s notifications automatically,y Android users will receive a small alert letting them know they have been unsubscribed. Users who still want notifications from a particular site can turn them back on by visiting the website again or by using the Safety Check option in Chrome’s settings.
