Google has accidentally revealed its next big Android UI overhaul — Material 3 Expressive.
In a now-deleted blog post spotted by 9to5Google, the tech giant described the redesign as its “most researched” update yet, aiming to create a more visually appealing and user-friendly interface.
According to the leaked post, Material 3 Expressive is the result of 46 rounds of research with over 18,000 participants. The redesign uses color, shape, size, and motion to improve usability across all age groups. Google says users were able to find interface elements up to four times faster compared to the existing Material 3 design. The company also emphasized that the update helps level the playing field for users over 45, making interface navigation as efficient for them as for younger users.
Google reportedly studied user focus patterns, emotional responses to visual elements, and even practical performance metrics, like which progress indicators felt faster or how large a button could be without becoming distracting. These insights formed the foundation of the new design language.
The new UI, expected to be detailed further during a dedicated session at Google I/O later this month, will likely include changes such as redesigned status bar icons, a new clock font, and a revamped quick settings menu. There are also signs of a refreshed Google Clock app.
As of now, Google hasn’t republished the original blog post, and the company hasn’t officially announced a release date for Material 3 Expressive. However, with I/O just around the corner, more details are expected to surface soon.
