Google is rolling out new AI-powered language learning tools inside its Translate app, designed to help users practice languages with personalized lessons.
The feature, now in beta, uses Google’s Gemini AI models to generate lessons tailored to your skill level and learning goals—whether it’s for travel, professional use, or everyday conversations.
Currently, the tool supports English speakers learning Spanish and French, as well as Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practicing English. By tapping the new Practice button, users can set their proficiency level and select scenarios such as chatting with family, preparing for work, or navigating daily life. Translate then builds interactive lessons where you can practice speaking, listen to conversations, and track your daily progress.
Google has also introduced a live translation feature that enables real-time conversations across languages. The app translates your speech into the listener’s language with both text transcription and audio playback. Unlike Pixel 10’s live translation, the Translate app doesn’t mimic your voice yet, though Google says it’s exploring that option.
Live translation is now available in the US, India, and Mexico, supporting over 70 languages including Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, French, Korean, and Tamil. With these updates, Google Translate is positioning itself as not just a translation tool, but also a direct competitor to apps like Duolingo in language learning.
