Facebook is rolling out passkey support on its mobile app, enabling users to log in using device-based authentication methods, such as fingerprint, face scan, or PIN.

The move enhances account security by replacing traditional passwords with cryptographically secure credentials that are resistant to phishing and credential theft.

Passkeys provide a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords, as they are tied to your device and automatically linked to the correct domain. This makes it nearly impossible for attackers to use phishing websites to steal login credentials. However, experts at the Electronic Frontier Foundation caution that users could still be at risk if they manually enter passwords on fake sites.

Meta says passkey support will launch soon on both Android and iOS, with plans to expand the feature to the Messenger app. Users will be able to use the same passkey for both platforms, joining other services like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and WhatsApp that already support this advanced login method.

Even after enabling passkeys, users will still have access to traditional login options, including passwords, physical security keys, and two-factor authentication. Additionally, Meta will integrate passkeys with Meta Pay, enabling secure autofill for payment details.
