YouTube is set to integrate Google’s latest AI video generation model, Veo 3, into YouTube Shorts later this summer, as announced by CEO Neal Mohan during a keynote at Cannes Lions.

The upgraded model promises enhanced video quality and audio integration capabilities, potentially revolutionizing short-form video creation on the platform.

Currently, Shorts creators have access to the older Veo 2 model via YouTube’s Dream Screen feature, which allows AI-generated backgrounds and clips. With Veo 3, creators can expect even more realistic visuals and advanced audio elements, though specific features for Shorts have yet to be disclosed.

One lingering question is whether Veo 3 access in Shorts will remain free of charge. At present, using the model requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription. YouTube hasn’t confirmed if the same paywall will apply within the Shorts platform.

Meanwhile, YouTube Shorts continues to see massive growth, now surpassing 200 billion daily views, according to Mohan. The addition of Veo 3 could further accelerate creative output and engagement on the short-form video platform.
