European publishers, tech companies, and startups are asking EU antitrust regulators to finish their long-running investigation into Google and take action against the company.

In a letter seen by Reuters, the groups asked European Union officials to complete the nearly two-year investigation into whether Google has been giving unfair preference to its own services in search results. They also called for a fine to be imposed on the company.

The letter was sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera, and EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen. The groups behind it include the European Publishers Council, the European Magazine Media Association, the European Tech Alliance, EU Travel Tech, and several others. Members of the European Publishers Council include major media companies such as Axel Springer, News Corp, and Condé Nast.

The investigation began on March 25, 2024, under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. EU regulators have said these cases are usually completed within 12 months, but this one has dragged on for much longer. The European Commission announced charges against Google last year.
