OpenAI’s upcoming adult mode for ChatGPT is expected to allow flirty and explicit text conversations, but not full pornographic content.
Based on reports, the feature will focus only on adult-themed text at launch and will not include image, voice, or video generation.
The feature was first announced in October. At that time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company had reduced enough of the serious mental health risks to move forward with “erotica for verified adults.” The rollout was expected sometime this quarter, but OpenAI later delayed it to focus on other higher-priority work. So far, the company has not shared a new release date.
According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, the delay also came from internal concerns and technical problems. Some advisers reportedly warned that the feature could still be accessed by children and might encourage unhealthy emotional attachment to the chatbot. One adviser even raised fears that the system could become dangerously harmful in extreme situations.
Moderation remains one of the biggest challenges. OpenAI is said to be trying to allow adult content while still blocking material involving abuse, coercion, or minors. That balance has reportedly been difficult to achieve.
Another issue is age verification. The system OpenAI developed to keep minors away from adult content was, at one point, incorrectly identifying children as adults around 12 percent of the time. That error rate appears to be one of the reasons the company is moving cautiously.

In simple terms, OpenAI seems willing to allow more adult-themed conversations in ChatGPT, but only within strict limits. The company is still trying to solve safety, moderation, and child protection concerns before launching the feature.
