Elon Musk has introduced a new online encyclopedia called Grokipedia, which he claims will challenge what he calls Wikipedia’s “woke” bias.
The American billionaire unveiled the project on his social media platform X, saying the AI-powered site will be “super important for civilization” and key to “understanding the Universe.”
According to Musk, the idea for Grokipedia came from tech investor David Sacks, a close ally and former Trump administration official known for his work on AI and cryptocurrency. Sacks reportedly encouraged Musk to build a conservative alternative to Wikipedia.
Unlike Wikipedia, where articles are written and edited by volunteers, Grokipedia uses Musk’s xAI chatbot Grok to review all entries. Visitors can only suggest corrections, not edit directly. Musk said Grok will stop relying on Wikipedia content “by the end of the year.” However, many pages currently include a note that they are “adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0.”
Early reviews suggest Grokipedia is still heavily dependent on Wikipedia’s structure and data. Some users have also pointed out missing information. For instance, the Grokipedia page on Donald Trump skips over controversies featured on Wikipedia, and Musk’s own biography omits references to a rally gesture described by historians as a “Nazi salute.”
In response, the Wikimedia Foundation said it is examining Musk’s new platform. “Wikipedia’s knowledge is—and always will be—human,” it stated, adding that AI models continue to rely on its open, collaborative system. “Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
