PayPal announced on Tuesday that it will let users make purchases directly inside ChatGPT starting in 2026.
The company is teaming up with OpenAI to bring this feature to life through a system called the Agentic Commerce Protocol, or ACP for short. This is an open-source standard created by OpenAI that allows businesses to list their products in AI apps so people can shop using AI tools.
OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature, launched in September, makes it possible for users to confirm their orders, shipping details, and payments right inside ChatGPT. By connecting PayPal with this feature, users will be able to pay using their PayPal wallets without leaving the chat. PayPal says this setup will also include buyer and seller protection and support for resolving disputes.
The company will also make it possible for users to pay with cards directly within ChatGPT through a separate payment system. Starting next year, merchants who use PayPal will have their products appear in ChatGPT search results under categories such as fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics. They won’t have to create any new integrations since PayPal will take care of the technical side of payments and merchant connections.
PayPal is also preparing to launch an agentic commerce suite for merchants. This new tool will allow sellers to display their catalogs in AI apps, receive payments from multiple AI platforms, and gain useful insights into how customers shop.
The company has been working to become a key player in AI-powered shopping experiences as more people turn to AI for everyday tasks. Earlier this year, PayPal partnered with Perplexity to enable checkout directly in its AI search tool. In September, the company also adopted Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to integrate its services with various Google products.
Beyond its commerce partnership, PayPal said it will provide all its employees with enterprise access to ChatGPT. Its engineers will also have the opportunity to use OpenAI’s coding tools, including Codex, to help improve their workflows and productivity.

“Hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT every week to help with everyday tasks, including shopping for products they love, and more than 400 million people use PayPal to make purchases,” said Alex Chriss, PayPal’s president and CEO. “By working with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will make it easier for people to go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
