OpenAI announced that it will offer its ChatGPT Go plan free for one year to users in India who sign up during a limited-time promotion beginning November 4.
The move comes as part of the company’s effort to strengthen its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.
The company did not say how long the offer will last but confirmed that existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also receive the free 12-month plan.
ChatGPT Go, which costs less than $5 per month, launched in India in August as OpenAI’s most affordable paid subscription. The service later became available in Indonesia and expanded to 16 more Asian countries earlier this month.
India has become a key market for OpenAI, with over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet connections. The company opened an office in New Delhi in August and is building a local team to deepen its footprint in the region.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously said India is the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Still, monetizing ChatGPT in the country has been difficult. Despite more than 29 million downloads in the 90 days leading up to August, the app generated only about $3.6 million in in-app purchases, according to data from Appfigures reported by TechCrunch.
ChatGPT Go gives users 10 times more usage compared to the free version for generating text, creating images, and uploading files. It also includes enhanced memory for more personalized and consistent responses.
“Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the creativity and engagement from our users have been incredible,” said Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT. “We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.”
OpenAI faces growing competition from companies like Perplexity and Google, both of which are targeting India’s young and tech-savvy audience. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to its 360 million users, while Google launched a free one-year AI Pro plan for Indian students.
