OpenAI appears to be testing a new subscription tier focused on scientific research, although it remains unclear whether it will be available to all users or limited to specific organizations.

References to a feature called “ChatGPT for Science” were recently spotted in the ChatGPT web app, according to posts shared on X. The discovery suggests OpenAI could be preparing a dedicated experience for science-related use cases.

Currently, OpenAI offers ChatGPT for personal use, Teams, and business or enterprise customers. While the personal version is available to everyone, Teams requires a company domain and a minimum of three users. ChatGPT Business is limited to registered legal entities.

Based on those existing requirements, ChatGPT for Science could follow a similar approach and be restricted to verified universities, research institutes, or other eligible organizations.

OpenAI has already shown interest in building AI products for scientific research. The company recently introduced GPT-Rosalind, a specialized model built on its GPT-5.5 architecture and designed for enterprise-scale life sciences research.

Unlike a standard version of ChatGPT with science-focused prompts, GPT-Rosalind is a purpose-built model created specifically for advanced research applications. It is available only through what OpenAI describes as a “trusted-access deployment structure.”

Access is currently limited to eligible organizations, including major pharmaceutical companies such as Novo Nordisk and verified research institutions conducting legitimate, public-benefit scientific research. The model also requires enterprise-grade security and strong safety controls that match or exceed the standards of ChatGPT Enterprise.

OpenAI may now be exploring ways to extend some of these capabilities to a broader range of institutions through ChatGPT for Science instead of limiting access to a small group of partners.

If launched, ChatGPT for Science could offer deeper integration with scientific research and discoveries than a standard ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI has not announced a release date, but references to the feature indicate active testing is underway and an official announcement could arrive in the coming weeks.
