Consumer Reports is asking Microsoft to delay its plan to end free security updates for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

In a letter to CEO Satya Nadella, the group warned that the move could “strand millions of consumers” with PCs that can’t upgrade to Windows 11.

According to data, around 46% of people worldwide still use Windows 10, and between 200 to 400 million computers can’t move to Windows 11 because they don’t meet the hardware requirements.

Consumer Reports criticized Microsoft as “hypocritical” for promoting cybersecurity while leaving older devices exposed. The group also pushed back against Microsoft’s $30 fee for a one-year security extension and free options that tie users to Microsoft products, calling them unfair.

They are urging Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10 for free until more users transition to Windows 11. The Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) echoed this demand, warning that up to 400 million working computers could be thrown away if the deadline stands.
