Microsoft has started testing a new experimental Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, bringing powerful AI features directly into the browsing experience.

This new mode allows the Copilot chatbot to access and search across all your open tabs, perform tasks like booking a restaurant, and appears directly on the new tab page.

Copilot Mode acts like a personal AI assistant inside Edge. Users can choose to let it view all open tabs, enabling features such as comparing hotel options or summarizing product listings from multiple sources. It offers deeper functionality than Google’s Gemini integration in Chrome, though not as extensive as the AI-first experience offered by Comet from Perplexity.

One noticeable change is Copilot’s presence in the address bar, making it easily accessible while browsing. The mode also supports voice navigation, allowing users to locate information on a webpage or open product tabs using spoken commands.

Microsoft is also planning to allow Copilot to access your browsing history and saved credentials—with your permission—so it can handle more complex tasks like booking reservations on your behalf.

These updates build on Microsoft’s previous AI efforts in Edge, such as its Copilot Vision feature, which helps the assistant understand what’s on your screen. According to Sean Lyndersay, Vice President of Product for Microsoft Edge, the company aims to turn browsing into a smart, organized experience based on topic-based journeys.

If you’re not interested in using Copilot Mode, don’t worry. Microsoft says it will be entirely optional. Users can enable or disable the feature at any time through the Edge settings menu.

Currently, Copilot Mode is free to use, but Microsoft notes that some features will have usage limits and the tool is only free for a limited time. This hints at a possible future subscription model for full access.
