Cloudflare restored its services on Tuesday after a major outage caused thousands of users to lose access to some of the world’s most popular online platforms, including X, ChatGPT, Canva, and Grindr.
The disruption, which began around 6:30 a.m. ET, affected websites and apps worldwide, and became one of the company’s most significant incidents in recent years.
According to Cloudflare, the outage happened after an automatically generated configuration file grew far larger than expected. This file, designed to help manage potential security threats, became so large that it crashed the software responsible for handling traffic across several Cloudflare services. The company, which powers around 20 percent of global web traffic, said it quickly deployed a fix, though some customers continued to face issues as the network recovered worldwide.
Cloudflare confirmed there was no indication of an attack or malicious activity behind the failure. Instead, it was a technical fault triggered by an oversized configuration file that overloaded key systems. The company emphasized that restoring stability was its top priority and noted that its investigation is ongoing. Shares of Cloudflare dropped about 2.3% in morning trading following the incident.
The outage also resulted in thousands of user reports on Downdetector, affecting access to major platforms such as X, Canva, ChatGPT, and Grindr. Reports peaked at over 11,000 before dropping to around 2,800 by mid-morning as Cloudflare gradually restored its systems. Downdetector tracks outages based on user-submitted reports, meaning the real number of affected users could be higher.
Cloudflare later explained that it saw a spike in unusual traffic to one of its services around 11:20 UTC, which contributed to the network errors that users experienced. The company’s global infrastructure, which helps keep websites fast and resilient, temporarily failed to process requests normally until the fix was deployed.
This outage follows another major disruption just last month, when Amazon’s cloud service went offline and caused widespread downtime for several popular platforms, including Snapchat and Reddit.
