Reddit is testing a new way for users to consume discussions by turning traditional text posts and comments into short videos narrated by artificial intelligence.

As part of the experiment, selected Reddit posts are being adapted into videos where AI-generated voices read the main post and some of its comments aloud. The video highlights the text as it is being read, while a note underneath tells users that it is a “Real conversation voiced by AI.”

One example is an eight-year-old post in the r/boardgames community asking users to recommend road-trip games that adults would enjoy. The post has more than 100 responses, but instead of only showing the traditional discussion, Reddit now offers a roughly three-minute video featuring AI voices reading the original question and selected comments.

Users can still access the normal discussion through a slider at the top of the post. The “Read” option displays the traditional text version, while “Play” switches to the AI-generated video. The new format could make Reddit discussions easier to follow for people who are less familiar with traditional online forums, while also allowing users to listen to posts instead of reading through long comment sections.

The experiment could also create some problems. AI voices may mispronounce names or unfamiliar words, while automatically selecting comments could potentially leave out important context or include responses that do not accurately represent the original discussion.

The test follows Reddit’s recent announcement that it is working on a redesigned video experience aimed at changing how users and communities connect, share and consume content on the platform. During an earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman also hinted at the company’s plans, saying Reddit was working on a way for users to listen to posts in the background.
