Microsoft has introduced two new recovery tools for Windows 11 that are designed to reduce downtime and make it much easier to fix devices when something goes wrong.

The features, called Cloud Rebuild and Point in Time Restore, were announced at the Ignite developer conference and are part of the company’s broader Windows Resiliency Initiative aimed at keeping systems running smoothly.

Point in Time Restore is the first major addition. It lets users and IT teams roll back a Windows 11 device to an earlier, working state within minutes. It works similarly to System Restore, but goes further by taking a complete snapshot of the system at different times. Because of this deeper snapshot, it can restore not only system files and settings but also local files and installed apps. Microsoft says this feature will enter preview this week in the next Windows 11 Insider build.

The second feature is Cloud Rebuild, which allows a full reinstallation of Windows 11 directly from the cloud. This is useful when a device becomes unresponsive or continues to have problems even after troubleshooting. Through the Intune dashboard, administrators will be able to choose the Windows version and language, and the affected PC will automatically download the installation files and rebuild itself.

Microsoft explains that the process uses Autopilot to set up the device without any physical interaction, while data and settings can be restored through OneDrive and Windows Backup for Organizations. The company says this method can cut recovery time dramatically, reducing what used to take hours or days to just a small portion of that time.

Microsoft plans to integrate both Cloud Rebuild and Point in Time Restore into Microsoft Intune in the first half of 2026. This will give IT admins the ability to trigger recovery actions remotely, manage large-scale fixes, and control Windows Recovery Environment features directly from Intune.

Earlier this month, Microsoft also began testing improvements to Quick Machine Recovery, a tool that helps fix Windows boot problems without needing physical access to the device. When Windows 11 fails to start because of a faulty update, configuration change, or drive issue, it automatically opens the Windows Recovery Environment and launches Quick Machine Recovery.

The tool then sends crash data to Microsoft so the company can remotely apply repairs such as removing bad drivers or reversing problematic updates. The latest version of the tool has been upgraded to detect and fix issues in a single scan, instead of repeatedly checking for solutions in a loop.
