OpenAI has begun testing ads inside ChatGPT, marking a major shift in how the AI platform is monetized.

Users on the free version and the lowest-priced Go plan will start seeing labeled “sponsored” links at the bottom of some responses.

OpenAI says the ads do not affect how ChatGPT answers questions. Instead, they appear separately as sponsored links and are clearly marked. Users who want an ad-free experience must subscribe to at least the Plus plan, which costs $20 per month. Higher-tier plans, including Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will also remain ad-free.

Free users can opt out of ads, but only by accepting fewer daily messages. Go plan users do not have this option, though both Free and Go users can dismiss ads, give feedback, turn off ad personalization, and stop ads from being based on past chats. OpenAI says advertisers receive only aggregated data, such as views and clicks, not personal chat content.

Ads will not appear for users under 18 or in conversations related to sensitive topics such as health, mental health, or politics. Even eligible users may not see ads immediately, as the feature is still being tested and rolled out gradually.
